The History of TS
Frequently Asked Questions
Tourette Syndrome, TS, is a nuerological disorder characterized by tics -- involuntary, rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. Meaning you make movements you can't control.
**Do the tics hurt?**
Sometimes, but not all the time. If you have a tic where your leg goes outward and it hits something then that hurts, but some cases are very mild.
**Is TS a cursing disease?**
No. People get that from the term Coprolalia. Coprolalia is where you make innapropiate remarks or curse involuntarily. About 20% of the people with TS have Coprolalia, but most people are confused because of what the media tells us. Copropraxia is involuntary obscene gestures, and not everyone with Tourette has that either.
What else do people with Tourette Syndrome have?
Some people with Tourette Syndrome have
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; the obsession to do "random" things and the obsession of random things)
ADHD/ADD(Attenion-Deficit Hyperacty Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder)
Anxiety (Stress Disorder)
Depression
Echolalia (The need to repeat sayings of another person)
Palilalia (The need to repeat their own sayings)
Klazomania (The need to shout)
Copropraxia (Performing obscene gestures)
Echopraxia (The need to repeat someones gestures)
**So how would you come to conclusion about a person with TS?**
We're just like you. Yes so every now and again we have our bad days, but it isn't as if we're alone in that. We have pains and struggles: yes. But we have more blessings, even when we don't notice it. People with Tourette Syndrome may make movements you don't understand, but we don't either. We may embarass you, but we can't walk away from it. We go through things like every body else and when it's all said and done, we're just like you.
